It has been less than 10 years since fishing kayaks were first designed to be fished standing up as well as sitting down. During that time SUP’s became very popular. The hull/board shapes evolved to be more stable and faster at the same time. Unfortunately for kayak fishing, the hull shapes got stagnant and didn’t evolve at the same rate at SUPs did. The result was kayaks needing to get much wider to achieve stability and forward speed suffered.
One of the advancements of the SUP design evolution was that they created faster and faster shapes on more and more stable boards, making it possible for people who were less skilled to be able to paddle faster and longer distances.
Companies like Jackson Kayak, Bonafide, and Native each created a very wide and stable fishing kayak for larger paddlers or kayak fishermen desiring to stand up and fish. These kayaks became quite popular as they gave a large percentage of fishermen the confidence to stand up and fish, which is a much more effective way to fish much of the time.
Apex approached this challenge a bit differently, going for massive stability for anyone to stand up, but also keep a fast, efficient hull for getting around efficiently. Using the design characteristics of the fastest racing SUPs with a full planing hull (flat bottom), and a cut-off stern for stability and speed. The Apex hull, designed by SUP race designer, Bob Blair (Speedboard) is the first of its kind in the kayak fishing world.
If you like the idea of being able to stand up to stretch your legs, or improve your casting and fishing performance, you’ll want to check out the most stable mono-hull fishing kayak on the market- the Apex Tyr.
It is only 36” wide, 2” narrower the competition’s most stable boats, faster, about 1/3rd of the weight and yet more stable for stand up fishing. Taking lessons from the best SUP designers was well worth the time. More people will be comfortable standing up in the Apex Watercraft than other kayaks before it.
