The Sunday after Thanksgiving I took Emily to fish in Alabama to check out some backwaters that are perfect for the Apex Tyr. In my family the only person other than myself who is truly “addicted” to fishing is Emily. Kristine stayed home and it is pretty comfortable at the Jackson Ranch this time of year. Fire in the fireplace, dogs lounging around, lots of food and drink to enjoy, etc..
However, going out into the cold, mud, on a rainy day, if you can catch some bass is worth the effort, I think. Emily seemed to agree. She can go a long time without fishing, but when fishing, she can’t sit there and do nothing. She has to be casting and when it is time to go, she is usually not ready to leave. “One more cast”. We hit a couple of areas, including one that required a long paddle in very shallow water for about 40 minutes. How shallow? If you stopped paddling you would be sitting in mud and not moving for a good part of it. Let’s just say that a pedal drive would be impossible to get in there. A torqeedo or trolling motor even more impossible, and most paddle kayaks would be extremely difficult, due to the keels and scuppers on them. So, perfect for the shallow running Tyr, is what I am trying to say. 🙂
I rigged some rods up for Emily and I. Emily loves the Wacky Worm and that is her “go to”. I try to get her throwing fast moving baits, but it isn’t what she is confident in yet. She saw me catch a couple quickly on the buzz bait and inquired so I gave her mine and she threw it about 5 times before putting it down and picking up the wacky worm again. Then I caught a few (good ones) on a Strike King pro grade swim jig and she asked me for one of those. She did start throwing that a lot and caught a few fairly quickly and was getting good at dropping it into the right places. I was rotating through the buzz bait, swim jig, and a worm on the bottom. The swim jig produced the most fish overall on this trip.
I talked to Dane about fishing and he actually suggested that he did like it a lot, too, but isn’t super confident in it and wants to get better. Hmm… perhaps we can get him hooked too!
Being able to stand and fish out of the Tyr makes it so much easier to skip lures in the little pockets that hold the fish. I plan on going to Florida next week. Another opportunity to really have fun with the Tyr!
